task force on the fight against COVID-19 in Imo on Monday, May 18, declared that the state is now coronavirus free.

 

Before now, the southeast state had seven active cases of the dreaded disease. Briefing journalists in Owerri, chairman of the committee, Professor Maurice Iwu explained that three out of the cases recorded in the state were discharged on Sunday, May 17 following their satisfactory condition.

Iwu is a well-respected Nigerian professor of pharmacognosy and a former chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission.

He studied at the University of Bradford, England, receiving a Master of Pharmacy degree in 1976, and a PhD in 1978.

 

He was appointed by Governor Hope Uzodinma to use his experience to help Imo state tackle the viral disease.

Similarly, the Akwa Ibom state government has discharged five more recovered COVID-19 cases with only one positive patient remaining in the state.

This was disclosed by the Akwa Ibom commissioner for health and state COVID-19 incident manager, Dr Dominic Ukpong.

 

The commissioner said the discharge followed two negative test results recorded by the patients as required by the Nigeria Centre for Disease
